Measure job-search outcomes without confusing scores with results
Define applications, responses, interviews and resume versions consistently. Understand attribution limits before claiming software caused an improvement.
Which outcomes should I track?
Track suitable applications submitted, substantive employer responses, interview invitations and offers as separate events. Record the date, role, channel and resume version. A tool score is a diagnostic signal, not an outcome. Counts without a denominator or observation window are difficult to interpret.
What fields belong in a simple log?
- Opportunity identifier, employer, role family, location and application date.
- Eligibility/fit notes, source channel and the exact version submitted.
- Response type and date; distinguish automated receipts from substantive responses.
- Interview invitation, stage and date; avoid counting multiple rounds as multiple first invitations.
- Offer date and status; record withdrawn and still-pending applications separately.
- Observation cut-off and next action; keep personal details out of any public dataset.
How do I calculate a rate?
Hypothetical example, not a HireOnix result: 4 first interview invitations from 40 submitted applications in a defined cohort is 4 ÷ 40 = 10%. State the observation cut-off and whether applications are still pending. Do not silently remove unsuccessful applications from the denominator.
Ten percent versus eight percent is a two-percentage-point difference, not a two-percent relative lift. Small samples and different target roles can make comparisons misleading. Do not publish a precise uplift without describing uncertainty and the underlying counts.
Does comparing resume versions prove causation?
Not by itself. Different employers, job fit, timing, referrals and experience can affect outcomes. Comparing one version this month with another next month is observational, not a randomized A/B test.
A credible pilot predefines eligibility, comparison method, outcomes, time window, consent and exclusions. Report the actual results, including no improvement. An independent reviewer can assess the method; their endorsement must not be assumed.
Does HireOnix have published outcome evidence here?
This guide explains a measurement method. It is not a claim that an outcomes dashboard, experiment system or independently validated interview uplift has been implemented in the separately hosted application. We do not present hypothetical arithmetic as customer results.
